Decubitus is a localized destruction of an area of skin and underlying tissues that develops as a result of prolonged tissue ischemia due to skin pressure. This occurs in recumbent patients who are placed in the same position for a long time. Tissues located above bony prominences show different resistance to hypoxia than other tissues located away from bone. Ulcers usually form on prominent parts of the body.
